India says environmental performance index based on ‘unscientific methods’

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Wednesday rebutted the Environmental Performance Index 2022 during which it was positioned on the backside on a listing of 180 nations judged for his or her environmental performances. The ministry stated the index has many indicators based on unfounded assumptions and that a few of these indicators are extrapolated and based on surmises and unscientific strategies.

India ranked lowest amongst 180 nations within the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) printed not too long ago by the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University, adopted by the UK and Finland. Denmark topped the listing.

Using 40 performance indicators throughout 11 problem classes, the EPI ranks 180 nations on local weather change performance, environmental well being and ecosystem vitality. “India, with increasingly dangerous air quality and rapidly rising greenhouse gas emissions, falls to the bottom of rankings for the first time,” the report learn.

But the Indian authorities in a press launch has deemed the indications flawed and offered eleven the reason why it doesn’t settle for its evaluation and conclusions the report presents.

The ministry has identified that the indications on water high quality, water use effectivity, and waste era per capita that are carefully linked to sustainable consumption and manufacturing should not included within the index.

It additionally stated that indicators like agro biodiversity, soil well being, meals loss and waste should not included regardless that they’re vital for creating nations with giant agrarian populations.

“Efforts must be made to include metrics that truly capture ecosystem productivity such that regulatory, provisioning as well as cultural services provided by various ecosystems like forests, wetlands, croplands are assessed and reflected in performance,” it stated within the launch.

On greenhouse emissions, the ministry says no indicator within the report talks about renewable power, power effectivity and course of optimization. The choice of indicators is biased and incomplete, it stated.

On environmental well being indicators, the federal government stated the index fails to have an indicator that may measure precise water high quality based on standards for wholesome water.

“India being an agrarian country has taken major steps towards the improvement of its agriculture sector and its practices such as Agro biodiversity, water use efficiency and soil health. With only two indicators under the Agriculture category the efforts of India towards the improvement of its agriculture sector and its practices are not reflected,” it stated.

EPI projections point out that simply 4 nations — China, India, the US and Russia — will account for over 50% of residual world greenhouse fuel emissions in 2050 if present tendencies maintain.
